Two ships for Star Trek Adventures

Captain Roger Taylor of the USS Essex has submitted several new articles for the Seventh Fleet blog with items for the role-playing game, Star Trek Adventures. Today’s entry gives two different ships that can be used in the game.

This is a ship for the Romulan Star Navy. It could be used in a Romulan campaign or commandeered by Starfleet or Klingon agents.

This entry covers a Ferengi smuggling ship and the NPC that would fly it. The SS Latinum Dust is run by Frump.

The Seventh Fleet blog is accepting submissions (please keep it family friendly) by any fleet member. If you have an article, cartoon, puzzle, photos or anything in particular, send it to Webmaster@SeventhFleet.org and perhaps you’ll see your works posted here.

Seventh Fleet Booth at FanX 2022

It’s time once again for FanX: The Salt Lake Comic Convention at the Salt Palace in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Yes, Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet will have a big presence at the con.

At booth 2278, members of the fleet will be hosting a charity booth to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. There will be a tribute to the late Nichelle Nichols and the debut of a brand new photo op setup. In the past we’ve had full sized shuttles, a Borg alcove, Captain Kirk’s command chair, a life-sized action figure box and a transporter console. What will the new photo op be? Come and find out. Many thanks to the USS Pulsar for heading up the booth this year.

Also the USS White Buffalo will be running their Artemis bridge simulator in one of the gaming rooms (255D) at the convention. They will be running the simulator with the fan-made Star Trek graphics. Gather a group of friends together and take your bridge stations and see if you can survive the challenges that await you.

Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet thanks Dan Farr, the staff at FanX and all of the many volunteers who help put this together. Running a con is no small feat. We are very grateful for this opportunity to perform our community service mission at this event.

Let us know if you order a copy. Also if you are interested in being on a committee for the next issue, please let your Commanding Officer know.

September is finally here and it is a busy one. There will be a Star Trek Day on September 8th (with some fans going to the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn in theaters), a special Star Trek Day at the West Valley City Library on Saturday the 10th and FanX: The Salt Lake Comic Convention on the 22nd to 24th of the month. Not only will we be at booth 2278 (right on the main corridor just before the celebrity autograph section) but the USS White Buffalo will be running the Artemis simulator in one of the gaming rooms at the convention. The USS Pulsar is taking the lead on the booth with the American Cancer Society being the selected charity for this year. If you would like to volunteer for either of these sections, please contact your department chief.

As mentioned above, the West Valley City Library will be hosting a Star Trek Day on Saturday, September 10th. This will run from Noon until closing and local Star Trek actress, Mary Rice, will be a guest. Because of this, we are counting this event as a Star Trek convention for rank and award purposes. The USS Delaware is taking the lead for this event but it is open for any Star Trek fan to attend.

Star Trek: Lower Decks season three is out and if you haven’t seen any episodes yet, you will love catching up. Don’t forget to watch the after show with Wil Wheaton and any of the Easter Egg videos found on YouTube. They have added to the show.

Farewell Nichelle Nichols

A wonderful tribute to Nichelle Nichols.

Like many Star Trek fans, we were saddened to hear about the passing of beloved actress and singer Nichelle Nichols. The Seventh Fleet would like to pass our condolences onto her family. We have many fond memories of watching her portrayal of the character Uhura, helping women and minorities get into NASA and the sciences and meeting Ms. Nichols at various conventions.

Your memory will always be a blessing to us. Thank you for all that you did.

The Admiralty held the 2022 Seventh Fleet Day on July 30th at the Richmond City Building in northern Utah this past Saturday. Despite a broken foot by Admiral Stark (be careful coming down stairs) it went pretty well. We had a ton of fun talking with each other and trying out the various science and engineering experiments that made up the games. Congratulations to the USS Valkyrie for taking home the Bragging Rights Trophy. They beat out the USS White Buffalo in the final heat with the mousetrap car races.

The third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will premier on August 24th on Paramount+. If you haven’t seen the trailer, you’ll find it on YouTube. We can’t wait to find out how the Lower Deckers get the crew back together and rescue Captain Freeman.

We don’t know where our booth will be at FanX: The Salt Lake Comic Convention, but we have been notified that our booth space has been reserved. The USS Pulsar is coordinating volunteers for this year. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your commanding officer.

Fleet Day 2022 is coming on July 30th

It is time for the annual summer event of the Seventh Fleet. Fleet Day is a time of games, food, friends and fun. It will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the Richmond City Offices and nearby park in Richmond, Utah. The opening ceremony will start at 10:00am. Lunch, which is walking tacos, will be held at Noon and the entire event should be wrapped up by 6:00pm. There is no cost for the meal but there will be a donation jar if you are inclined to help out.

We are asking for anyone who would like to bring a dessert to share to please do so. Please list the ingredients of the dessert.

This event is open for all ages and families. It is not limited to Fleet members so this is the perfect opportunity to bring family members, friends and interested recruits to check out the group. If you haven’t RSVPed you can still attend.

This year the Admiralty is in charge of the games. Let’s just say there are quite a few different activities planned. There is a track for adults and kids. One thing that is different is that the Admiral’s Challenge is already in the hands of the chapters. Contact your Commanding Officer for details.

Captain Ann Knowlton of the USS Rendezvous is coordinating another silent auction like the one that was held at the Admiral’s Banquet. Each chapter is invited to bring up to five items to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to that chapter. This will be a cash only event.

The uniform of the day will be club t-shirt or any Star Trek/geeky shirt. There are some outdoor events so please dress for the weather and come prepared to have fun.

Trekkies 25th Anniversary Edition review

Twenty-Five years ago a documentary about Star Trek fans was produced and released in theaters called Trekkies. It was narrated by Denise Crosby and focused on various Star Trek fans while interviewing various actors from the (then) franchises that were airing. Recently Shout Factory released a 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray to the wild that included not only the movie but a special interview with producer Denise Crosby and directory Roger Nygard called “A Trek Back”. I picked up this disk and invited my college aged kid to sit down and watch it with me since she had never seen it before.

Back when this movie was released in the theaters, I was invited with other members of my Star Trek fan club to attend a sneak-peak screening prior to the opening night. Because they knew we were die-hard fans, the organizer had set up some hard trivia questions. I recall that one of them was “What Star Trek character was referenced in the 1980’s song 99 Red Balloons by Nena?” It had been a while since I had seen the movie so it was an excellent re-visit. I could re-call some of the stories about some of the various fans that were interviewed and what happened to them after Trekkies had been released. Gabriel Koerner was able to move into a career in movies and television working on special effects. I had to explain to my kid why the Star Trek juror, Barbara Adams, was a big thing in the 90’s during the Whitewater Trial. Specifically how the media was trying to latch onto anything during a boring trial (which was nothing like Law and Order) It also reminded me of when I entered a costume contest at CONduit (a Salt Lake fan-run convention) in a Star Trek uniform with a sign on my back stating “Avoiding jury duty”. Yes that got a lot of laughs. My daughter looked up the Star Trek dentist in Orlando and discovered that something like that was still going on. The name may have changed (which is how she had heard about it). Another reminder that was kind of sad for me was seeing the various dealers room tables during the 90’s. Back then, that is where you got your latest blueprints or resource books. (yelling at cloud moment) Most dealers rooms have been very dull. Comic Conventions seem to be the “State Fair” setup and smaller fan-run conventions are falling by the wayside. The dealers room use to be a huge draw for me at conventions, now I hope to find something. But seeing the Trek clubs in action and talking about how Star Trek fans help with charity brought a smile to my face. This is something that is continuing to this day as we try to move our world into the 24th Century.

When the movie was over I had a great time remembering this movie. I asked my college aged art student what she thought. She loved it except for some of the semi-erotic art put out by various fans. Seeing what fandom was like before she was born was an interesting experience.

After watching the movie I played the original trailer (I’m very happy when companies include this in their media) and “A Trek Back”. The special was recently filmed with Crosby and Nygard and had some very interesting tidbits including a response from JJ Abrams. I was hoping there would have been another special or two (this is blu-ray after all) but that was it. Hopefully we will get more specials if Shout Factory releases a blu-ray of Trekkies 2.

For the price on Amazon, Trekkies was a good pick up for the money. It was good to add this to my collection (my previous ownership was the VHS tape I had recently found in the garage). And yes, I want Trekkies 2 on blu-ray to complete my collection.

We are excited because July 30th is our annual summer event known as Fleet Day. It is a series of games, food and fun where the entire Star Trek family gets together. This event is open to everyone no matter the membership status. If you have family members or recruits that are wondering what the club is about, this is the event to show them. The opening ceremony will start at 10:00am. Lunch will be served at Noon and the Admiral’s Challenge and awards will be completed by 6:00pm. This will be held at the Richmond City Office (where we held the Admiral’s Banquet back in 2018). This is only one of two Fleet events the entire year so this is a wonderful opportunity to see our fellow members.

The ending of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds had a lot of us wondering what will happen next? It also made us sad because there is no new Star Trek episodes coming out for a little while. The teaser for the next season of Star Trek: Lower Decks seen in The Ready Room after show only made us want to use a time crystal to get to the next episode. Season Two of Strange New Worlds has already wrapped up filming so we hope to hear a release date soon.

Work continues for Fleet Day which will be held on Saturday, July 30th. The location will be the Richmond City Office (where we held an Admiral’s Banquet back in 2018) and the park next to it. We will be holding several games and events. A lunch of walking tacos and salad will also be served. Get your RSVP into your Commanding Officer so we can prepare the proper amount of food. This is one of two Fleet events for the year and is like a big family reunion. There will be a lot of members in attendance and it is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been knocking it out of the park on the episodes that we’ve seen so far on Paramount+. We can’t wait to see where the adventures will take us next. We also enjoyed the ending to Star Trek: Picard season two. The third season has already been filmed and will include several alumni from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Admiral Dennis Hollinger and Vice Admiral Carl Stark lead a contingent of Seventh Fleet members to the last StarFest in Denver. It was a bittersweet moment. We had opportunities to meet up with our extended Star Trek family in Denver and remember all of the good times of conventions past. StarFest was one of the last of the fan-run conventions. It was ran for fun and enjoyment of our various fandoms. Something that seems to be missing from the large scale conventions. A big thank you to the Walker family and all of the volunteers who put on a great convention. So long and thanks for all the fish.
