Rank Advancement Definitions-

Admiral’s Project- This is a special project that the Lieutenant Commander (Commissioned Officer Track) coordinates with a member of the Admiralty one-on-one.  This could be on a subject that the candidate or the member of the Admiralty comes up with.  Each Admiral’s Project will be done with a different member of the Admiralty Board.  Think of a personal project on steroids.

Admiralty Review Board- Required for Commissioned Officer Track Lt. Commanders and Commanders.  A letter of recommendation is written by the candidate’s Commanding Officer (rank Captain or above) starting the process.  The Admiralty will look over the letter and name a member of the Admiralty as the Review Board Director.  Three other board members will be randomly selected (rank Captain and above) and a date will be selected for the uniformed event. The letter of recommendation and the date of the review board will be sent to all Fleet members ranked Captain or higher.  If they were not selected for the board, they may submit any questions to the Review Board Director to be brought up on that date.   At the Review Board, the board members will ask questions to the candidate and based upon the responses, recommend the candidate for promotion or what would be needed to turn their ‘no’ vote into a ‘yes’ vote.

Academy Basics Course- Course #1 covers basic questions about Star Trek and its impact on our culture.  Course #2 asks questions about the basics for Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet.   The course can be proctored by a member of the Fleet ranked Lieutenant or higher.  Once the candidate has finished, the proctor will assist the candidate in researching the answers they could not answer on their own at first.

Advanced Academy Exam- This is an optional trivia-based challenge that is a closed-book test.  It is proctored by a member of the fleet ranked Lt. Commander or higher after the Academy Basics Course #1 has been completed.   If taken while the rank of Crewmember and the member obtains a score of 50% or 70% and higher, they will earn the Class of Excellence medal and an automatic promotion.

Command Project- This is an opportunity for the Commissioned Officer Track candidate to demonstrate their leadership skills.  A proposal form is submitted to the Admiralty via the candidate’s Commanding Officer.  This project is designed to promote and enhance the club or community using volunteers from the Fleet to accomplish a goal.  A final report by the candidate should be provided afterwards.  This can be taken by any member rank Lieutenant (j.g.) or higher.

Command Simulator Mission- An opportunity to lead others in a Star Trek style environment for members of the Commissioned Officer Track.  There are two possible options to fulfill this requirement.  Option 1: The Christa MCAuliffe Space Center in Utah County (https://spacecenter.alpineschools.org) where the candidate can fill the CO, XO or Ambassador position.  The candidate should be the coordinator for the event where other members of the Fleet may want to attend.  Option 2: The candidate commands an Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator as presented by Starship Frontier (https://starshipfrontier.org/).  The candidate will run in a simulation filling a different bridge position each time (Comms, Science, Engineering, Weapons and Helm) before taking a final simulation as the Captain.  Either option can be accomplished before the candidate is a Lt. Commander.

Command Test- This is an advanced Star Trek trivia test that is available in two formats.  A pre-generated test can be provided based upon one series of Star Trek.  The second is a customized test where the candidate can select two episodes from each series from which a pool of questions will be generated within 90 days of submission.  The candidate will need to submit a Command Test Form selecting their answer.  This test can be proctored by a member of the fleet rank Captain or higher.

Leadership Class- A classroom event conducted by Captain Charles Corr with room for 4-6 attendees with handouts and participation. This four-hour event will cover various leadership basics that can be used not only within the club, but also within real-life scenarios as well.  This class can be taken by a member of any rank advancement track at any rank level.

Meet the Admiralty- For members of the Provisional Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer tracks.  This high-level requirement is present so that the Admiralty can be aware of the members who have elected to obtain these higher ranks.  It is a non-uniformed event and may even be conducted by video conference.   The candidate will request the meeting through their Commanding Officer.

Merit Sheet- Merit sheets are short open-book exams usually ranging from 5-25 questions and used in the Commissioned Officer Track. These sheets can be based on knowledge (real world or show trivia), leadership, service or participation and are authorized by the chapter CO.  Some merit sheets are selected by the member, and others are selected by the chapter CO depending upon how they wanted to see the member develop.  For the rank of Commander, the candidate will create merit sheets that need to be authorized by the chapter CO.

Own Your Own Uniform- A requirement for full Commander (Commissioned Officer Track) or Master Chief Petty Officer (Non-Commissioned Officer Track).  This can be any type of Star Trek cosplay that was purchased or handmade.  The candidate can fulfill this requirement if they are in possession of the cosplay after they have joined the Fleet.

Plan Chapter Meeting/Activity- Planning and conducting an event is a way that the candidate can demonstrate leadership skills.  Members of the Commissioned Officer Track will need to plan a chapter meeting or activity with the permission of the Commanding Officer.  The candidates on the Non-Commissioned Officer Track can plan a chapter event (with the CO permission) or a department event (with permission of the Department Chief).

Promotional Merit Points- These are points earned in four categories by submitting a Duty Report to the chapter of the candidate’s activities for the past month.  They include Participation (attending events, purchases, having fun), Knowledge (learning about Star Trek and the world around us), Service (Community service, as well as assisting the chapter and fellow crewmembers in the spirt of Star Trek) and Leadership (training others, experience, planning and conducting activities).  Some items are club based, while others are events of the real world.  A suggested list is provided later in this document.

Road Trip– This is a planned event to visit a Star Trek or Science related location.  Possible destinations could include: A Star Trek convention, a filming location used in a Star Trek production, observing an Eclipse totality, an Astronomy viewing event, a speech given by a scientist, writer or actor in a lecture setting.  Like the PMPs this is an open-suggestion opportunity.  Out-of-Area should be traveling out of your local area or to a place you’ve never been too before.

Time in Grade- This is a time of service to the chapter and the Fleet measured in one-month increments.  It is achieved by meeting an attendance requirement for the month at a chapter meeting or activity, or a department meeting or activity.  This attendance can be online or in-person.  The candidate can meet 80% (rounded up) of the TiG minimum for the desired rank, they meet the Time-in-Grade requirement.  For example, to reach the rank of Lieutenant needs 12 Months of TiG. 80% of that is 9.6, so after 10 months the Lt. (j.g.) candidate has met this requirement.  If they miss the third month of the twelfth month requirement due to real world issues, they are not held back because of the 80% guideline.

               TiG Guide (80% rounded up)

  • C2 to C1 = Three Months (80% = 3)
  • C1 to Ensign = Six Months (80% = 5)
  • Ensign to Lt. (j.g.) = Nine Months (80% = 8)
  • Lt. (j.g.) to Lt. = Twelve Months (80% = 10)
  • Lt. to Lt. Commander = Sixteen Months (80%= 13)
  • Lt. Commander to Commander = Twenty-Four Months (80%= 20)
