FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Here is a list of common questions about the fleet and their answers. If you have any questions that we can answer, please send them to us at FAQ@SeventhFleet.org. And yes some of these questions were really asked of us.
Question: How old can you be to come to meetings and activities?
Answer: The chapters and the fleet welcome members of all ages at our various activities and meetings. However we require that anyone age 14 or younger be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Question: What is more important, the chapter or the fleet?
Answer: The chapter of course. The fleet is a support platform to help the chapter and the chapter is the support platform to help the member. If there are no members, there are no chapters. If there are no chapters, there is no fleet.
Question: Does your fleet hold elections for your leaders?
Answer: In a way, yes. But not in the standard election cycle. We would rather focus on running the fleet the best way we can instead of running annual popularity contests. Members and chapters vote every month. If they approve of what we are doing, they continue to participate in the program and events that we have put forth. If they are voting against what we are doing, they vote with their feet and leave. Some people have elected to vote this way.
Question: Which term do you use for your shortened name? 7th Fleet or Seventh Fleet?
Answer: Seventh Fleet is the proper shortened name that we use.
Question: Did your group film the Tales from the Seventh Fleet fan films?
Answer: We support Star Trek fan films and see them as a future to our fandom. We have chapters and fleet members that have worked on and released various fan films. However we are not associated with Tales from the Seventh Fleet.
Question: Is the Seventh Fleet a Sim fleet?
Answer: We have members who participate in various Star Trek Sims. We also have a lot of members who play the Star Trek paper and dice role-playing game and/or also play Star Trek Online. However the Seventh Fleet is not a Sim.
Question: Do you have any plans to rejoin Starfleet International?
Answer: Other than one chapter that had left SFI years before they had joined the Seventh Fleet, none of us have been chapters or members of SFI. There was a period of time that some people assumed that we had broken away from SFI during one of their turbulent moments of history, however this was never the case. We have friends who are in SFI and we have held join activities with various SFI chapters, but we have no desire to join SFI.
Question: Are you fans of other Science Fiction shows?
Answer: Oh yes! We have fans with a wide variety of interests in Science Fiction, Fantasy, Anime, Horror and more.
Question: Can you send people in costume to our event?
Answer: We can pass on your request to the local chapters. They communicate directly with members who may be willing to volunteer depending upon the event.
Question: Do you run an Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator?
Answer: One of our chapters has put a lot of time and effort into the Artemis simulator. This would be the White Buffalo, which has run this simulator at conventions and events. Note: The White Buffalo (as with most of our chapters) focuses on more than just the simulator or one primary interest.
Question: Are you guys registered as a 501c3 non-profit organization?
Answer: No. The paperwork would be too much since we are more of the elbow-grease type of fan club. We have worked with several 501c3 charities as part of our goal to help our community.
Question: Do I have to have a uniform to be a member or attend meetings?
Answer: Basically no. Our meetings and most activities are not held in uniform. However we have helped members obtain a uniform for special events, fan films and conventions. Usually someone reaching the rank of Commander will already have a uniform of their own choice. The uniform guidelines and classifications seen under the membership section is for information purposes only and not a requirement for membership.
Question: Is there a club around where I live?
Answer: A complete listing of our chapters can be found on the Chapters page. We like to have our clubs where we can get together at least once or twice a year with other chapters in the fleet. Sometimes we have members who move to other areas and start a new chapter-in-training. We may not be in all places, but we would like to think that we are friendly. We are actively looking for chapters in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada and other connecting states.
Question: How much does the club cost to join?
Answer: Neither the individual chapters or the fleet as a whole charge any dues to join. It already costs too much to be a Star Trek fan. The chapters and the fleet usually follow a “pay your own way” philosophy. Thus if the chapter attends an event with an entrance fee, the individual members pay for their own admission.
Question: How many lights did Picard see?
Answer: There are four lights!
Question: Given that God is infinite, and that the universe is also infinite… would you like a toasted teacake?
Answer: That’s another bready question.
