Trek of The Month: October 2019 (and Introduction)

So we are going to try a new program within the Seventh Fleet website. This will help us with our goal of having fun with Star Trek (yea novel concept for a fan club right). Every month we will announce a variety of Star Trek episodes and movies from all of the Star Trek series (and some that are from other franchises). These are recommended episodes/movies to watch sometime during the month as your schedule allows. But you’ll be watching the same episodes/movies during the month that members of your Star Trek family will be watching as well.

Some months we will try to have a theme for the selection of episodes/movies. Other months may be just a random selection of episodes/movies. If you have a suggestion for a theme, please email it to Webmaster@SeventhFleet.org for consideration.

We will have a listing for each series. TOS (The Original Series), TAS (The Animated Series), TMS (The Movie Series), TNG (The Next Generation, DS9 (Deep Space Nine), Voy (Voyager), Ent (Enterprise) and DSC (Discovery). There will also be a listing for Other Trek (bloopers, documentaries or anything Trek related that isn’t an episode/movie), Fan Film (one of the many Star Trek fan films available on the internet) and Non-Trek (Any other Sci-Fi/Fantasy series that sounds like fun).

So for those of you who just want to have fun, that’s it in a nutshell. Watch one or more of the suggestions within the month. That’s all and enjoy.

For those of you who are overachievers (and you know who you are), we will try to have Merit Sheets available to fill out while you are watching the episode/movie. However it is strongly suggested that if you have never seen the episode/movie before, watch it first before trying to answer a merit sheet for it. Again, we watch the show for fun. Let us know if you have any questions.

And without further ado, the theme for October 2019 is Spooky Stories (it is the month of Halloween). We tried to select something that would be appropriate for the time of year.

TOS: Catspaw (A Halloween based episode complete with a haunted castle)
TAS: The Magicks of Megas-Tu (Stuck in a world where magic works and science doesn’t)
TMS: Star Trek: First Contact (Cybernetic zombies, definitely not Swedish)
TNG: Phantasms (You must kill zem. You must kill zem all)
DS9: Empok Nor (Trapped on an abandoned station with maniac killers on the loose)
Voy: The Haunting of Deck 12 (Neelix tells a ghost story. Could it be true?)
Ent: Impulse (What happens when Vulcans go out of their minds?)
DSC: Context is for Kings (What killed the crew of the USS Glenn?)
Other Trek: For the Love of Spock (A documentary on Leonard Nimoy)
Fan Film: Ghost Ship: A Star Trek Fan Production (It’s just a recovery mission)
Non-Trek: Alien (1979 movie, hunted by a killer alien)

And for those of you who wish to do so, here are links to some of the Merit Sheets/ADVOTs that have already been produced (not all episodes have been done yet).

Phantasms

Star Trek: First Contact

Meeting/Activity Alert: Multiple Chapters

Today there are two different chapters having meetings and activities that anyone can attend.

At 1:00pm the members of the USS Ticonderoga are getting together for a Klingon BBQ. This is an end-of-summer event. Bring your own meat to grill and a dish to share. This will be held at Central Park (address: 330 Center St, Clearfield, UT) main pavilion. There is a kids area just next to the pavilion for the young Klingons to use. Contact: Info@USSTiconderoga.org

The USS White Buffalo will be holding it’s monthly meeting at the Game Haven (address: 762 N Main St, Tooele, UT). This will start at 6:00pm. The club will be discussing the future fun events that they want to plan. Contact: CO@USSWhiteBuffalo.org

Star Trek Anniversary: The Next Generation (1987)

“Lets see what’s out there, engage.” Picard- Encounter at Farpoint, Stardate: 41153.7

On this date Star Trek made it’s return to television as the pilot episode for Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered with “Encounter at Farpoint”. Even the name sounds mysterious.

Star Trek fans were introduced to Captain Jean Luc Picard, Commander William Riker, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lt. Commander Data, Counselor Troi, Lt. (j.g.) Geordi LaForge, the Klingon Worf and more. The show ran for 176 episodes over seven seasons. It would later spawn four TNG movies.

Star Trek Anniversary: Enterprise (2001)

“For nearly a century, we’ve waded ankle-deep in the ocean of space. Now it’s finally time to swim.” Forrest- Broken Bow, Date: Apr 15, 2151

The second Star Trek series to air on the United Paramount Network (UPN) was Star Trek Enterprise. It premiered on this date in 2001 with the pilot episode “Broken Bow”. The series had 97 episodes over four seasons.

Set before The Original Series, Enterprise explored the challenges of Earth, Vulcan, Andor and Tellar as they struggled to find common ground and the eventual founding of the United Federation of Planets.

Star Trek Anniversary: Discovery (2017)

“We come in peace, that’s why we’re here. Isn’t that the whole idea of Starfleet?” Burnham- The Vulcan Hello, Stardate: 1207.3

Just as Star Trek: The Next Generation broke new ground for first-run syndication and Star Trek: Voyager helped launch a new television network, Star Trek Discovery moved our favorite franchise into the world of streaming. The pilot episode, “The Vulcan Hello”, premiered on this date in 2017. The first episode was shown on CBS with the remaining episodes shown on CBS All Access. The series is still in production with the third season coming soon.

RIP Aron Eisenberg (1969-2019)

“I know I’ve got something to offer.  I just need a chance to prove it.”  Nog- Heart of Stone, Stardate: 48521.5

Roles of Aron Eisenberg.

Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet is saddened to learn that Star Trek actor Aron Eisenberg suddenly passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019. Many of us fondly remember him as the character Nog on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He took a character that seemed relatively minor at the start of the series, and turned him into one of the members of the DS9 family. There are many great moments in DS9 where Aron’s acting sparkled like a diamond. Rest in peace Aron.

Aron was very friendly to the fans at the various conventions. If you would like to help out with his funeral expenses, please visit the go fund me page that was authorized by his widow. https://www.gofundme.com/f/aron-eisenberg-memorial

More site updates

More work was done on the site today. We removed several old link pages (these were held over from the days when link pages were very popular on websites). Most of the links were out of date and the information on actors, writers, etc. could be found by a simple google search.

Also updated the USS Valkyrie logo and scheduled several upcoming blog posts with information on Star Trek anniversaries and chapter meetings and events. These posts will come at midnight on the date of the events. Check back for information on the fun our chapters will be having.

Work on updating the site will continue over the next week. If you see anything that is badly out of date, please let us know at Webmaster@SeventhFleet.org
