Hailing Frequencies Open June 2022

Work continues for Fleet Day which will be held on Saturday, July 30th. The location will be the Richmond City Office (where we held an Admiral’s Banquet back in 2018) and the park next to it. We will be holding several games and events. A lunch of walking tacos and salad will also be served. Get your RSVP into your Commanding Officer so we can prepare the proper amount of food. This is one of two Fleet events for the year and is like a big family reunion. There will be a lot of members in attendance and it is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been knocking it out of the park on the episodes that we’ve seen so far on Paramount+. We can’t wait to see where the adventures will take us next. We also enjoyed the ending to Star Trek: Picard season two. The third season has already been filmed and will include several alumni from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Admiral Dennis Hollinger and Vice Admiral Carl Stark lead a contingent of Seventh Fleet members to the last StarFest in Denver. It was a bittersweet moment. We had opportunities to meet up with our extended Star Trek family in Denver and remember all of the good times of conventions past. StarFest was one of the last of the fan-run conventions. It was ran for fun and enjoyment of our various fandoms. Something that seems to be missing from the large scale conventions. A big thank you to the Walker family and all of the volunteers who put on a great convention. So long and thanks for all the fish.

Congratulations To:
Crewman 2nd Class Julie Henkes (USS Kelly) for completing the Deep Space Nine Academy Exam.
Crewman 2nd Class Julie Henkes (USS Kelly) for earning a promotion to Crewman 1st Class.

The Admiralty, which got roped into running the 2022 Fleet Day, has been working hard on putting the event together. After our last planning meeting, I can’t wait to see how this day of games and friends turns out.

At our recent Admiral’s Banquet, Crewman 1st Class Eric Moorer was awarded the Federation Medal of Honor after his actions saved the life of a co-worker. Acting Captain Jill Bogler reported that the award was presented to C1 Moorer at the April USS Kelly meeting.

In a sad note, in May 2022 the last Starfest convention will be held. For those of you who have never heard of this, shame on you. Starfest is a convention that has been run for 45 years by the same family company (Starland). Admiral Stark called it “The Dragoncon of the west that you’ve never heard of.” The event had grown to multiple hotels and con-within-a-con festivals. Unfortunately, the events of the past to years, rising costs in getting hotel space and guests and the family growing older contributed to the decision in making this the last party. This is a shame really since these conventions were really a family reunion for the various fans of different genres and shows. We got to meet several fans who became members of our extended Star Trek family. Members of the Seventh Fleet would caravan to Denver to attend this event since the early 1990’s. Thank you to the Walker family and Starfland for all of the many memories. We are looking forward, even in sadness, to the last Starfest.

The USS Kelly will be holding it’s annual “Kelly Kampout” on July 15-17 and they have opened it up for any Seventh Fleet member who would like to attend. Contact the Kelly’s Executive Officer, Lt. Commander Dawn Woods for details.

RPG Adaptation for Star Trek Adventures: Doomsday World

Captain Roger Taylor of the USS Essex has done it again. He was inspired from reading the Star Trek: The Next Generation novel #12 “Doomsday World” to adapt it into an adventure module. This can be used with the Star Trek Adventures RPG by Modiphius.

This 29 page adaptation includes three new races that can be used in the game. There are also several NPCs, a planetary profile, a vehicle profile and several handouts.

Warning: if you want to play in this adventure, do not read the PDF file below.

It was so good to see everyone at the 2022 Admiral’s Banquet hosted by the USS Rendezvous. We had not held an in-person banquet since 2020 for obvious reasons. We had a blast watching the various videos and participating in the silent auction.

Our next fleet wide gathering will be Fleet Day on Saturday, July 30th. The location is still being determined but this event is open to everyone. There will be food and various games for both adults and kids.

Admiral’s Banquet and a special surprise

A prototype of the new Seventh Fleet Annual.

This Saturday, March 26th, is one of two annual fleet events. The Admiral’s Banquet. This is where the Admiralty gets to acknowledge the efforts that the members put into the chapters and fleet. The USS Rendezvous is hosting the event at the Richmond City Center (were we have held past banquets) with a starting time of Noon. Please note the change in time because we’ve usually started at 2:00pm in the past.

The USS Rendezvous will be serving a Taco Bar for the meal. However they stated that they would not be insulted if you bring your own food because of dietary/taste reasons. There is no charge for the food, but a tip jar will be set up to help for those that wish to help out.

There will also be a silent auction available with items donated by various chapters in the Seventh Fleet. This will be cash only as per the organizer. There will also be various videos created by the chapters.

This is a nice dress or uniformed event. We will also be taking group photos at the banquet.

New this year we have a special surprise. As you can see from the photo above, we now have a prototype issue of the Seventh Fleet Annual. This fanzine is a “Best Of” featuring selected articles and artwork from various chapter newsletters and blogs and comes in at a 136 pages. Come check it out at the banquet. We will be gauging interest in this publication.

It’s been a very long time since we’ve held the Admiral’s Banquet in person. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again.

A starship for Star Trek Adventures: Cochrane Series-500 Scout Spaceframe

Captain Roger Taylor continues to send in a wave of wonderful articles taking various elements of Star Trek and adapting them for the Star Trek Adventures role playing game.

For this entry, we have the Cochrane Scout Spaceframe that was (barely) seen in two Star Trek: The Animated Series episodes. Once Upon a Planet and Mudd’s Passion. Details about this ship on screen can be found at Ex Astris Scientia and the Guide to Animated Star Trek (see question 29). Captain Taylor used information from the USS Enterprise Officer’s Manual by Geoffrey Mandel and Doug Drexler.

As a bonus, Captain Taylor also included a “hero” ship the Molly B.

Kelly Kookbook Entry: Foul Madammas

One of the goals of the Seventh Fleet is to celebrate the creativity of our members. In the late 90’s (then) Lt. Commander Ruth Burns assembled recipes from different sources to put together the Kelly Kookbook. Not only did members of the USS Kelly and the Seventh Fleet help out, but several actors and production personnel from Star Trek also sent in submissions. While our dear friend Ruth is gone, her book of Star Trek recipes is still with us for us to explore. We will post a submission from the book on a semi-regular basis. With February 8th being the birthday of Ethan Phillips, the actor who portrayed Neelix on Star Trek: Voyager, we thought we would post one of his submissions to the book. Enjoy.

A PLAYABLE RACE FOR STAR TREK ADVENTURES: THE ELTHAN

Here is another article submitted by Captain Roger Taylor of the USS Essex. The Elthan is a race that appeared in the Star Trek story “Night Whispers” by Diane Duane. This story appeared in the Star Trek: Enterprise Logs anthology.

These statistics can be used for the Star Trek Adventures role playing game by Modphius. Just a reminder that members can submit articles for any Star Trek gaming system.
