Welcome new recruits

Besides raising funds for the Best Friends Animal Society of Utah, part of the reason we had a promotion boot at FanX: The Salt Lake Comic Convention, was to introduce ourselves to possible new members.

If you are checking out our website after visiting our booth, welcome. We hope that this site will help answer any questions you may have about joining our Star Trek family. If there is a question that you can’t find here that you need answered, feel free to email us at Info@SeventhFleet.org.

Just a reminder that there are no dues to join Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet. There are also no “uniform” requirements to join. Just show up and have fun is all we ask. The level of participation is completely up to you. Families of all ages are welcomed to attend, however anyone under the age of sixteen should be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

If you signed up at the booth to be contacted, that information has now been passed onto the local chapters. There were a few entries that were really hard to decipher. We tried to pass on the information correctly, but may have made a mistake in our translation. If you signed up and have not been contacted soon, feel free to reach out to the fleet at the above Info address and we can assist you.

We are also very active on the Seventh Fleet Facebook page. Most chapters have their own individual FB pages as well.

Hopefully we will get a chance to see you at a future event. Always remember to have fun.

And another FanX: The Salt Lake Comic Convention is in the books. Many thanks to the many volunteers from different Seventh Fleet chapters who helped out at the booth. We were able to raise some money for the Best Friends Animal Society-Utah. A big thank you to all of the members and friends who came by to visit us at the booth. And another big thank you to Dan Farr and his army of volunteers at the convention. We greatly appreciate your efforts in putting this show together.

If you are visiting our website after checking out our booth, welcome. Feel free to look around and learn more about us. If you have any questions or you would like to join one of our chapters, feel free to email us at Info@SeventhFleet.org. We hope that you’ll be able to join us at one of our many fun events in the future.

Here is a video taken at the con that features the Seventh Fleet.

Our own Admiral Stark was interviewed by Salt Lake Magazine at the con.

And we know that a lot of photos were taken at the convention. We would love to post them on a future blog post. Feel free to email them to Webmaster@SeventhFleet.org and we will upload them soon. Here are some that we already have.

How To Join The Seventh Fleet

We get a lot of visitors to our website that are interested in knowing more about Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet. Usually the question comes up: “How do I join your Star Trek family?” This blog post will go into details of how to join and why we follow this path for membership.

The first thing to keep in mind is that membership in the Fleet or one of it’s chapters is free. It already costs too much to be a Star Trek fan (as most of us already know). In our 23 years of operations we have never charged dues. Some of our chapters are 25-35 years old and they have also been dues free the entire time that they have been in existence. The reason behind this is that we want members who show up to the events because they are fun and interesting instead of attending because they want to “get their money’s worth” out of the club. If a chapter attends an event that has an admission fee, then the individual members pay their own way into the event. For example, if the group is going to a local corn maze for a fun activity, you would be buying your own ticket into the maze.

Another commonly asked question is: “Do I have to own a uniform/cosplay to join?” The answer is no. While we have a lot of members who enjoy the Star Trek cosplay aspect of our fandom, it is not a requirement. If you wish to create Star Trek cosplay, there are plenty of members who would love to give tips and advice on how they put together their cosplay. We also embrace creativity. If you have cosplay that isn’t 100% screen accurate, you are still welcomed to participate.

So to officially join the Seventh Fleet, you must complete four steps.

  1. Attend two meetings/activities of the chapter you wish to join. A list of the chapters can be found on the Chapters section of the Fleet website. If you visit their website or contact the Commanding Officer or Executive Officer, they can let you know of upcoming meetings and activities. You can also email Info@SeventhFleet.org and request information on a nearby chapter. Why are two meetings or activities required for membership? In the past we had interested Star Trek fans attend their first event to check out a chapter. Some discover that it’s not their cup of Earl Grey tea. Those that return for a second meeting are showing that they are interested in perusing a free membership.
  2. Fill out an application. The chapter you wish to join will provide you with a paper or electronic application that you can fill out and submit. It will provide information on how to reach you to keep you informed of upcoming meetings and events. It will also ask which department you wish to join so that you can be assigned a Department Chief. There is also a section on the application that notes who recruited you to the club. If a friend referred you, please put their name down.
  3. Meet the Chapter Commanding Officer and Executive Officer. These are the chapter’s president and vice-president. We feel that it is always good for members to know the CO and XO of the club they are joining just in case they have any questions or concerns. This also gives them an opportunity to welcome you to the Star Trek family.
  4. Receive your Orders. If the CO/XO have accepted your application for membership, they will then submit that application to the Fleet for assignment and generating a service number. If the application is accepted by the Fleet then an official set of orders welcoming you to the club will be generated and sent to your Commanding Officer. This person will then present them at a club meeting officially welcoming you to the chapter and assigning you your starting rank in Starfleet.

While these steps may seem intimidating, they are usually quite easy to accomplish. There are plenty of members who are more than happy to assist you along the way. And don’t forget that you can also email Info@SeventhFleet.org if you have any questions.

Live Long and Prosper and Always Remember to Have Fun. Welcome Aboard.

USS Pulsar launching ceremony

The USS Pulsar was able to hold their official launching ceremony on Saturday in Utah County. The club became a full chapter in 2020, but due to the pandemic, the party celebrating the efforts had to be delayed until 2021.

Vice Admiral Carl Stark (Commander-in-Chief of the Seventh Fleet) was able to perform the reading of orders and transfer of command. Captain Charles Corr and Captain Erica Stark performed the christening ceremony smashing bottles on the hull.

As you can see from the photos, a lot of energy and effort went into the launching ceremony. There was a lot of Star Trek themed food items available for the visitors to partake in.

Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet welcomes the members of the USS Pulsar into the Star Trek family. May you live long and prosper and we look forward to your many adventures.

USS Kelly 35th Anniversary

USS Kelly 35th Anniversary display

In September 1986 Captain Dennis Hollinger and Commander Richard Henline officially launched the Star Trek fan club, the USS Kelly. This club is the oldest Star Trek club running in Utah and was one of the founding members of Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet.

Past and present members of the USS Kelly recently gathered at Murray Park to reminisce about past activities and the friendships made along the way. There was a display of past USS Kelly t-shirts (including the first Kelly uniform work by then-Captain Hollinger to launch the chapter). There was also several photo scrapbooks, copies of past newsletters (over 80 issues and counting), old technical drawings and the first attempt at the Kelly Combadge (made out of resin).

The USS Kelly had originally started as a chapter of the national Starfleet Command organization (based out of Baltimore, MD) before this parent organization disbanded in December 1997. In January 1998 the USS Kelly joined with the USS Rendezvous, USS Retributor and the USS Ticonderoga to form Starfleet Command’s Seventh Fleet.

Dennis Hollinger held the position of the first Commanding Officer. When he moved up to Commander in Chief of the Seventh Fleet, his good friend Richard Henline took over the center chair. After several years Captain Henline stepped down to take a position with the fleet and David Thalmann took command of the Kelly (called the Kelly-A). After several years David had to step down for health reasons and Rhonda Hollinger became the Commanding Officer for a few years. The former Operations Officer, Nada Linnarz then became the Captain of the Kelly-B. Earlier this year Captain Linnarz moved to St. George and handed the reigns to the current Commanding Officer, Jill Bogler.

Most fan run clubs had a habit of disbanding before reaching their second anniversary. So the fact that the USS Kelly has reached 35 years shows the testament and resilience of the members of this Star Trek family. Here is to 35 more years.

Here are some photos of past members and events.

Interviewed for Star Trek Day

Wednesday, September 8, 2021 will be the 55th Anniversary of the premier episode of Star Trek. For many fans, September 8th is now celebrated as Star Trek Day. Paramount presents several online panels and events. Fans get together and watch Star Trek episodes and local libraries have been putting up Star Trek Day displays.

Community radio station, KRCL 90.9FM has interviewed our Commander-in-Chief, Vice Admiral Carl Stark, for a special that will air on Star Trek Day. This interview is scheduled to be aired around the 6:30pm time frame. The livestream can be accessed here. We invite you to tune in and check out the interview.

Many thanks to the Thermians of Utah for setting up this interview and to KRCL 90.9 FM for the opportunity.

Hailing Frequencies Open September 2021

Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2021 Fleet Day. We had a ton of fun meeting up with the members of our Star Trek family and seeing friends. It had been way too long since some of us had gotten together.

There are three items that we wanted to bring to your attention besides the usual assortment of news.

On Saturday, September 4th the USS Kelly will be celebrating it’s 35th Anniversary. This feat is amazing for several reasons. It shows the dedication and love that the members of the USS Kelly have put into their club. Through challenges and triumphs, the crew stuck together to reach the momentous occasion. They will be celebrating from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Murry Park Pavilion #3. All are invited to attend. Bring your memories.

The very next Saturday on September 11th, the USS Pulsar will be holding an official launch ceremony. Technically the Pulsar launched as a full-chapter in 2020, however certain events prevented a get together to celebrate the accomplishment. Captain Joe Coleflesh has decided that they will get together at 2:00pm in Utah County. Please RSVP on the Facebook Page Event so that they can get a proper headcount for food.

FanX the Salt Lake Comic Convention will be held at the Salt Palace on September 16th to the 18th. There are a ton of guests. From the Star Trek series we will have the opportunity to see Zachary Quinto (Mr. Spock from the Kelvin movies) and Edward Furlong (Fixer on the Star Trek Renegades fan film series). There are also guests from Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Supernatural, MASH, Doctor Who and more. The Seventh Fleet is planning to run a booth at the event raising money for The Best Friends Animal Society. (crosses fingers that all goes well)
